Region: Bay of Plenty/Waiariki

Art form: Māori weaving

Project name: Mahi Raranga

Creative name: Anna Hayes

Project information: The aim for our kura is engage with a qualified artist of Māori descent who has creditable international and national experience to deliver Te Ao Māori knowledge and world views related to weaving, to ākonga from year 9 to year 13. Rotorua Girls High School is a low-decile kura with a high percentage of Māori learners. Currently Māori weaving does not form part of the curriculum and strong interest to experience this art form has been requested by our ākonga. This includes learning all relevant protocols and processes. These skills would link directly into the art and technology curriculum areas. It is widely recognised that participation in cultural practices enhances the holistic well-being of individuals, the wider whānau and community. Students will have an opportunity to develop their key competencies including problem solving, te reo, tikanga, kawa, whanaungatanga, and showcasing their creative expression.
