Successful schools - Round 1

Round 1 of the Creatives in Schools programme has now been finalised. Schools, kura and creatives will be working together to deliver a creative experience for their students and ākonga. Here are the projects that will be undertaken in Round 1.

  • Te Kura Kaupapa Māori o Te Kotuku

    Students will learn tikanga and reo about whatu and create a collaboratively woven cloak using contemporary materials.

  • Upper Moutere School

    Years 6, 7, and 8 students will be empowered to create a textile wall hanging that will represent who they are today, acknowledging their cultural heritage and honouring the local environment.

  • Wakefield School

    Students will write, produce, and perform an original theatre work based around the evacuation of their entire Wakefield Village due to a massive forest fire in 2019.

  • AUT Centre for Refugee Education Early Childhood Centre

    This project focuses on using drama conventions to improve learning outcomes, especially in literacy, through developing oral language.

  • Marlborough Girls' College

    This project is a collaboration between students from the girls' and boys' colleges and two local artists in a Pasifika performing arts programme.

    Students will work with a master carver in the creative process of designing and carving Pou Whenua.

    Students will design and create a number of small whāre to make an outdoor play space.

    Students will create three mosaic artworks within the theme of their inquiry unit 'Ka Mua, Ka Muri'.

    Students will create a 'HeART Space' featuring artworks they create that link back to Russell School's HEART values.

  • Springlands School

    10 schools will work with the creative to learn Pacific dance and song to be performed in school and at the Marlborough Polyfest.

  • The Gardens School

    Year 7 and 8 boys will develop language and other skills in visual arts, animation, and film, so they can express their ideas through creative mediums.

    Students will research the rich stories of the awa (Patea River) and express them in murals installed in the school and community.

  • Heretaunga Intermediate

    Female students will be guided through basic skills in a variety of drawing practices and facilitate a collaborative project to create sculptural work to enhance the school environment.

    Students will develop their cultural narrative, with the final outcome being a visual depiction of this (2D and 3D).

    Students across all year levels will learn skill, protocols, and processes around Māori weaving.

  • Aparima College

    Year 9 students will create a Well-being Walk that features sculpture and poetry and will link the Riverton Arts Centre with Aparima College.

    Students will create, rehearse, and perform a new play around the idea of well-being and what it means to be happy and healthy.

    Year 8 students will each create an artwork that speaks of identity and serves as a leaping-off point for drama collaboration.

    Students to create a mural that also deepens knowledge of the kura's kaupapa and community values by co-constructing a visual representation of the school's community - past, present, and future.
