West Auckland is preferred, but will travel to other parts of Auckland. Locations beyond Auckland are possible if the project is more intensive.
When I'm available: I'm generally available all day on Tuesdays and Fridays. Other times during the week are negotiable.

My arts or creative practice (including details about my specific focus within that art form/practice and my strengths)

I am a community engaged filmmaker and I work with special needs schools and community groups in and around Auckland. The resulting films are shared in the community, uploaded to YouTube and occasionally entered in film festivals. My role is to facilitate every aspect of the filmmaking process and encourage participants to take on active roles according to their interest and ability. The primary goal is to give each participant an experience of the filmmaking process. The finished films reflect the ideas and abilities of the various individuals and institutions involved. My greatest strength is in the ability to foster a creative atmosphere where the participants are co-creators. Education and co-creation happens at every level of film production, beginning with story ideas. Everything from acting and set decorating to camera and costumes are all parts of the process. Music and sound creation can be a part of the production. On occasion I will also collaborate with the editing. Whenever possible, I work with someone who is a writer, actor and facilitator who enables the writing and acting side of the process. This allows me to focus on camera and direction. The results are a better story and higher production value.

I have worked as a socially engaged filmmaker for more than 20 years. I have worked professionally as a director, editor and camera operator for clients including Radio New Zealand, Māori Television, TV3 and the English National Ballet. I have facilitated upwards of 200 community film projects in both England and Auckland. The person I like to work with is a creative researcher, facilitator and producer. He’s produced dozens of films, plays and operas. He specialises in enabling creative development through active community workshops. He is also an experienced arts educator having taught creative writing at a tertiary institute.

Describe the experience you have had working with children or young people, teaching or facilitating creative processes

All the work I’ve done in schools has been an applied creative subject. I have taught filmmaking, digital editing and photography, and I've worked with kids from 8–16 years old. The bulk of my work has been with community groups and special needs schools. One film workshop that I ran included 10 people between the ages of 8 and 83 years! Mainstream curriculum teaching: a college in the UK (2001–2005) Photoshop and Digital Editing; a Film and Television institute (teaching at NCEA Level 5–7) Media Studies and Digital Editing.

Why I want to be part of the Creatives in Schools programme and how my involvement will link to my creative practice

The majority of my independent filmmaking practice has been socially engaged projects. Filmmaking by nature is a very collaborative exercise, and I enjoy empowering people in the community and on the margins of society to tell their stories. Film and video are very popular mediums and yet they can be very challenging to produce at a high level. My workshops break down the process and demystify what goes on behind the scenes of a film. It is a joy to show people step by step how the film language works and to see how much they can learn. Sharing my knowledge and skills is something I feel very strongly about and inspiring others to be productive and creative has been the most rewarding part of my career.
