My arts or creative practice (including details about my specific focus within that art form/practice and my strengths)
I work with painting, collage, text and sculpture using charcoal, house paint, crayons, cardboard, plaster Paris, paper clay, newspapers and found objects. I am interested in the challenges presented by the materials – the slippages, the process and the meaning behind the art. I describe my art as very experimental and subversive, a signature touch would be that my work has this slap-dash, rather messy unfinished and abandoned style, while also expressing a deep sensitivity and sentiment. My style falls under the field of 'Provisional Painting' a field similar to 'outsider art' in which artists reject the ideas of perfection and consequently take greater risks – artists such as Valerie Hegarty, Mai Feuer, Ava Seymour fall under this banner. I get my inspiration from my daily life, observations in nature, current news stories including climate change and art history. I have a passionate belief in the liberating power of art to engage and transform our hearts and minds. I have a Fine Arts degree (2005), level 9 credits towards MA (2014/2015) and a postgraduate diploma in Arts Therapy (2018).
My track record of experience and success - or the track record of experience and success of the creative or artist that I will partner with
When I graduated from art school I received an Art Award for Painting, 2005. I won the people's choice event at our local wearable arts show – I had made two garments out of plastic cutlery and bread ties, more recently I completed my postgraduate diploma in Arts Therapy with distinction last year. I have for over a decade, displayed new works in a yearly show with women artists in the local area. I have previously delivered photography, mosaic and puppet-making courses in a local area school which I received very positive feedback.
Describe the experience you have had working with children or young people, teaching or facilitating creative processes
I have organised and held classes in mosaics, drawing, photography and puppet making at a local school for children aged 5–10 years. I have run weekend mosaic courses for adults. The last two years I have assisted in kids zone art activities at the annual local music festival. I have held arts therapy sessions under supervision as part of my training at the school of design.
Why I want to be part of the Creatives in Schools programme and how my involvement will link to my creative practice
I am keen to be part of this programme and work with kids in schools as I admire the energy and enthusiasm they possess and their intuitiveness and problem-solving abilities. When I work with young people I am always amazed at the outcomes as it is never how I first imagine, they always bring something more. Children are gifted storytellers and I'd like to expand on what they have to say, whether we work with day-to-day concerns or something related to their future well-being? Following my creative practice I'd like to use discarded materials, my idea is to have the children think about how we can use our creativity to create something new out of rubbish that is generated every day. In the end I envision the learning outcome will be both 2D and 3D drawing-sculpture, looking at form, style, texture, and process, the final outcome will resemble the thoughts they share about our environment, art and politics. Ultimately, I would like the students to have a deeper understanding of how artworks can be made, and extend their ideas on what art is, so it is made more accessible to them.
