My arts or creative practice (including details about my specific focus within that art form/practice and my strengths)

I am a freelance cellist who has dedicated the majority of my teaching hours to a project in Ōtara for the past five years. Our aim is to provide a safe, inspirational environment where students can learn to work with one another, gain confidence in themselves and learn techniques to overcome their inhibitions to realise their full potential. As a performer, my speciality is chamber music. I work best with other people and have always enjoyed the challenge of bringing projects together. I have founded two chamber music groups here and abroad and have been an integral part of the organising and managing process.

My track record of experience and success - or the track record of experience and success of the creative or artist that I will partner with

I hold a Bachelor of Music Honours degree from the Royal Northern College of Music, as well as a German equivalent Masters degree in Chamber Music. Aside from that, I completed a one year orchestral course whilst simultaneously studying German at the Geothe Institute. As a freelancer in Auckland, I regularly play with the APO, ACO and Bach Musica. I have also worked as a baroque cellist with NZ Barok and was principal cellist with Ensemble Polymnia. In Scotland, I was a founding member of the Eris Ensemble with whom I recorded contemporary Scottish classical music.

Describe the experience you have had working with children or young people, teaching or facilitating creative processes

I have been a part of a project in Ōtara for the past five years. Touring with a piano quartet has led to mentoring young chamber ensembles across the country under the CMNZ umbrella in preparation for the NZCT Chamber Music Contest. I also tutor for the APO Connecting Team, providing tuition on a project basis to various young cellists from a range of schools and youth orchestras. In Germany, I worked with the team at an organisation dedicated to teaching children, from the age of 2 years upwards, English through the medium of arts and music.

Why I want to be part of the Creatives in Schools programme and how my involvement will link to my creative practice

During my work I have enjoyed the privilege of working with students from diverse cultures and backgrounds. This is an aspect of the arts that I enjoy and would hope to continue growing in and learning from. Through my study and work in Europe and New Zealand, I have never ceased to be amazed at how music can help us all find a common ground, no matter the language or cultural barrier we may believe exists. The opportunity to closely collaborate with trained school teachers would be a great benefit to my own learning as a music tutor and it would be something that I would hope to bring back into my current work.
