My arts or creative practice (including details about my specific focus within that art form/practice and my strengths)
I have always been a creative person, who enjoys helping others find their own creative potential. Being a registered teacher I am currently working part-time running a well-being visual art programme set up after the earthquakes. I have also spent much of this year focusing on my own creative goals, with study and involvement in a couple of exhibitions. Having a strong passion for both creative and well-being practice, I am currently finishing a Diploma in Creativity and have also completed my Mindfulness Facilitation certificate in 2019. I enjoy working in all areas of visual art, as well as growing literacy skills alongside this where applicable. This may be with students who have a strong passion for visual art and literacy, or with those who require support in areas such as well-being management or academic guidance.

- Art teaching experience for 10 years, both classroom and private.
- Involvement in both school and community art projects for several years.
- Collation and teaching of student works for Youth Art Exhibitions.
- Creation of several large-scale murals for school and community spaces.
- Diploma in Creativity (to be finished in April, 2020).
- Mindfulness Facilitation certificate obtained in 2019.
- Collaboration with other artists and organisations during art projects.
- Exhibition of own works – Outstanding Printmaking Award in local art expo.
- Current Primary Teaching Registration.
Describe the experience you have had working with children or young people, teaching or facilitating creative processes
I have been a registered teacher for nearly 12 years now. During this time have I have worked as a full-time classroom teacher as well as part-time art teaching, release and relieving. I have worked with all primary year levels during my art teaching experiences, and continue to do this in a part-time capacity. I have worked with smaller groups of students on murals and other art projects and as well as larger class-sized groups on various art-based units. I am happy to consider any creative ideas that are put forward, and will work with you to help make your vision happen within your school. I also have a current first aid certificate.
Why I want to be part of the Creatives in Schools programme and how my involvement will link to my creative practice
I believe that unlocking people’s creativity allows them to really understand their true potential as humans. If Rangatahi can begin to understand ‘presence’ through the act of doing joyful things, this builds a great foundation for both positive learning experiences and happiness. Making, creating and using imagination helps young people develop important skills such as perseverance, resilience and problem solving. It can also provide a platform for calmness, success and positive interactions with others. This is why I believe teaching these skills through practical opportunities and then reflecting on how these experiences make us feel is so important. Art and creativity give opportunity to connect not only with our own inner self and emotions but also with the earth and our fellow human beings.
