My arts or creative practice (including details about my specific focus within that art form/practice and my strengths)

I am a freelance artist and science communicator who specialises in combining art and science through illustration. I have extensive experience creating educational comics for science, technology, engineering and mathematics based organisations. To create these projects, I draw on my five years of experience as a freelance illustrator, and the knowledge and skills gained from my MSc in Science Communication and Public Engagement at an overseas University. I have worked on both community-based and international projects with many significant international clients. My online portfolio is available on request.

My track record of experience and success - or the track record of experience and success of the creative or artist that I will partner with

As part of my MSc in Science Communication and Public Engagement, I completed my thesis, which focused on the use of narratives in comics to communicate science. My work has been published by The European Space Agency, Edinburgh Science Festival and EUSci. My recent research-practice collaboration, an illustrated workshop on how to use stories for climate and social change, was displayed alongside the Environmental Justice Foundation in an international exhibition and human stories of fear and hope during climate change.

Describe the experience you have had working with children or young people, teaching or facilitating creative processes

My role as Event Developer at an international science festival gave me invaluable experience designing and delivering workshops for adults and children in several countries. These versatile workshops were for ages 5+ and ranged from public engagement with science, to knowledge brokering sessions, to hands-on arts and crafts. In this I trained groups of up to 200 people in public speaking. In Auckland, I run a weekly creative writing meetup at an adults centre. I also teach an online Comics and Sequential Art course for ages 12+.

Why I want to be part of the Creatives in Schools programme and how my involvement will link to my creative practice

My work aims to create space, opportunities and inspiration to facilitate positive growth through connection, while striving to discover and create the conditions that empower communities to utilise science for collective development, ecological, economic and social change. I believe it is valuable to address the be-do divide, where students are unable to visualise themselves as a scientist/artist, which leads to students dropping art and science subjects around the age of 13 to 14. I hope to empower students to reflect and grow through building creative learning skills.
