My arts or creative practice (including details about my specific focus within that art form/practice and my strengths)

My creative practice centres around zero waste philosophies and resource recovery, I believe that we can creatively innovate solutions through our arts practices. This enables critical thinking and problem solving to enhance our out-of-the-current-box thinking. I believe that designers can serve their community by providing solutions to problems. Witnessing the amount of waste created in commercial fashion production, I set about creating a solution. An opportunity to create unique garments and provide a local solution to a problem facing the fashion system globally. Reducing waste without compromising style. My designs aim to mitigate environmental harm from modern fashion production. Upcycled garments minimise impact to the environment from disposable consumer items. Utilising a textile resource recovered from landfill, commercial offcuts, and recycling centres, adding value to otherwise discarded materials. Only purchasing ethical fabrics and being transparent about where and how they get to me. Encouraging conscious consumption by spreading awareness and giving an environmental choice. Global problem, local solution.

My track record of experience and success - or the track record of experience and success of the creative or artist that I will partner with

I have run numerous pop-up projects as part of a fashion studio of which I am the founder. I have run wearable art workshops in conjunction with schools in 2014. I worked for eight years in after-school childcare and enjoyed the challenge of creatively inspiring children. I run workshops under my own brand and am currently setting up a resource recovery centre to enable better reuse and repair of wasted materials. You can see more of a list on my CV.

Describe the experience you have had working with children or young people, teaching or facilitating creative processes

I spent eight years working in after-school childcare at two schools. This was a care role but enabled me to bring different creative play into that space. In 2014 I spent a term with a class from a primary school creating and assisting them to make wearable art from found resources, this was displayed as part of iD Fashion week 2014. I have also run many workshops as part of my fashion studio to teens, adults and children, currently we are working on a project. The themes I work with are zero waste, waste minimisation and upcycling wasted and found resources.

Why I want to be part of the Creatives in Schools programme and how my involvement will link to my creative practice

I want to be involved in the Creatives in Schools programme to inspire children and their whānau to think differently about their waste and how we can reuse it for good. To enable a shift towards a circular economy we need to start thinking on an individual level as well as a schools, community and business level. This will fit well into my practice as an upcycler as I work to include others in the community in the kaupapa of reuse, repair and rethinking our current wasteful systems.
