My arts or creative practice (including details about my specific focus within that art form/practice and my strengths)

I am a storyteller, arts educator and author. As well as practising my art forms through storytelling performances for adults and children and published works, I create teaching resources and workshops for teachers who wish to learn about or strengthen their own use of arts in their teaching. I have been invited around the world (to over 20 different countries) to share my work and my written work has been published in several different languages. I am also a Trustee and Creative Directive of a Charitable Trust that uses storytelling and story making for community building and environmental education.

My track record of experience and success - or the track record of experience and success of the creative or artist that I will partner with

Describe the experience you have had working with children or young people, teaching or facilitating creative processes

I am a trained early years teacher (3 to 8 years) with a degree in Education and specialist training in arts education. I have run community-based dance and drama classes since 1991, had my own school of dance and drama, and founded a local Story Centre. I have run professional development workshops for teachers since 1993, and have shared my work in numerous arts-based educational conferences throughout Australasia. I have worked with children ages 3 to 18 years in workshop settings and annually run an arts-based environmentally education week-long programme for children 3 to 10 years at a regional park funded by Auckland Council. My approach values integrated arts that is highly interactive and promotes curiosity and delight.

Why I want to be part of the Creatives in Schools programme and how my involvement will link to my creative practice

My work has always had an arts education focus. I believe that the arts provide effective learning opportunities that ignite children's curiosity support their well-being. The 'line' between my own practice as an artist and my work educationally has been very fluid and I have always placed a greater emphasis on process over production. Children have a unique and refreshing perspective on the world which i find challenging and invigorating.
