My arts or creative practice (including details about my specific focus within that art form/practice and my strengths)

I am a qualified primary teacher, with five years full-time teaching experience although I no longer hold a current teaching registration. Last year I completed my Masters in Education, specialising in Visual Art. I have spent the past three years involved in various visual arts practice as well as tutoring both children and adults. During this time, I have worked with local schools alongside the council's community arts advisor to create murals with various schools in the Rotorua area. This has resulted in my latest project working independently with a school on murals to represent their values.

My track record of experience and success - or the track record of experience and success of the creative or artist that I will partner with

I have worked with a well-known muralist and Community Arts Advisor at Rotorua Lakes Council, creating murals with seven or more schools. This has led to the design work gradually falling to me, and the latest school project which I am working on directly with the school. I practice personally in both acrylic and watercolour, and have sold commissions of my artwork over the past two years, which have also led to further work. I have tutored art successfully through the school holiday programmes locally, and currently tutor art weekly to adults.

Describe the experience you have had working with children or young people, teaching or facilitating creative processes

I worked at an intermediate school for five years until the end of 2011 in an arts-focused academy. Since then I spent a couple of years tutoring art to a range of ages (5 to 14 years) at a local arts centre during the school holidays. In the past three years, I have worked with groups of children in a range of schools to plan, design and paint murals for Rotorua city or for the schools themselves. I also currently tutor primary and high school children part-time at an after-school centre. In addition, I have recently been involved with a local community centre, facilitating young adults to complete murals for their area of the city.

Why I want to be part of the Creatives in Schools programme and how my involvement will link to my creative practice

I enjoy being a part of creating art for the community as well as facilitating art within schools. I gain much from educating others in creativity, and seeing increased confidence in students as they take part, and work hard to get good outcomes for those who I work with.
