My arts or creative practice (including details about my specific focus within that art form/practice and my strengths)

I am a passionate and creative Visual Art and classroom teacher, with nine years’ experience both locally in New Zealand and internationally in Singapore. My passion for Visual Art lies in both teaching and learning. I love teaching students about different art forms, genres, artists, techniques, skillsets and mindsets. As a practising artist myself I love learning from other creatives and developing my own creative repertoire through curiosity and exploration. I am currently working as a Visual Art teacher in Singapore, however, I am returning to live in New Zealand in December 2020. I have experience delivering a rich and engaging art programme to children aged from four to twelve years of age. I am excited about the prospect of continuing my creative journey at home in New Zealand. A link to my YouTube channel is available on request, showing how I created simple, engaging art activities that students could complete during our home-based learning programme.

My track record of experience and success - or the track record of experience and success of the creative or artist that I will partner with

I have grown my passion for visual art and developed it into my profession. Over the last three years, I have been able to cultivate an incredibly rich Visual Art programme alongside an extremely talented team, where success can be seen everywhere you look. Success can be seen, within every artwork: all artists create a piece of work that they’re extremely proud of.

With support, freedom, encouragement and scaffolding every learner can experience success. Within the process it’s not just the product where success can be seen; it's in the art process itself; the trials and the errors, the surprises and self-discoveries, the curiosity and the chaos, the frustrations and the fun. It’s not just about the skill sets that are taught but the mindsets that are developed along the way. Within the artists I believe that the real measure of success is how each artist feels about the subject of Visual Art. Every single lesson I am met with huge smiles and “I love art”, “what are we doing today, I’m so excited?” Having young minds develop a love for Visual Art is the real measure of success.

Describe the experience you have had working with children or young people, teaching or facilitating creative processes

I have considerable experience working with young people. One constant factor throughout my life has been my connection with young people. When I first started working my involvement with children was centred around babysitting and sport coaching, and then moved onto nannying and tutoring. Teaching was always my natural pathway and over the last nine years it has enabled me to grow and develop my love for working with young people.

My recent experience as a Visual Art teacher has allowed me to merge my two passions of teaching and creativity into one. Visual Art and young minds work hand-in-hand. Young learners are so creative, curious, playful, experimentative, and are natural risk-takers. Visual Art naturally lends itself to all of these elements, and when supported by a passionate Visual Art teacher, rich, real and creative learning comes to life. I have experience teaching Visual Art in its many forms to learners from four to twelve years of age. I am aware of the requirements that learners need to possess at each age and stage. I know how to provide them with content and experiences that will encourage curiosity and creativity while challenging and developing their skill sets and mindsets. I always work to ensure every learner has a feeling of success and the becoming of an artist.

Why I want to be part of the Creatives in Schools programme and how my involvement will link to my creative practice

Visual Art teaching is my passion, sharing my passion creates purpose, and sharing my purpose has the ability to spark passion and joy in others. I love sharing the art process with our most creative people in the world; our young learners. Every art project becomes a shared learning experience where we all acquire knowledge from one another. I learn just as much from our young artists as they discover from me. No two artists create the same work of art. I love witnessing the moments of self-discovery and pure pride and joy. I would love the opportunity to work with your school community to create a meaningful, engaging and creative Visual Art programme that allows students to express themselves.
