My arts or creative practice (including details about my specific focus within that art form/practice and my strengths)

I am a Hamilton, New Zealand-based artist and work from my studio at a local theatre. My work includes paintings and drawings, performance and installation as well as illustration, murals and zines. More recently I have been collaborating with multi-disciplined artists to create immersive artworks/installations where in addition to my paintings, there are soundscapes, lighting and special effects. Inspired by a childhood packed with American comic books and cartoons, art stopped and started between Saturday morning television programmes and superheroes. My work today is an amalgamation of contemporary painting and comic book illustration. I make bodies of new paintings and drawings in a non-theoretical manner in my studio, weaving experience and subconscious ideas into my mark making, treating the works as Rorschach tests until they reveal an end point compositionally or through narrative. Repeated ideas and motifs are Influenced by universal dreams, the collective unconscious, science-fiction, overheard conversation, social commentary, political observation and humour.

My track record of experience and success - or the track record of experience and success of the creative or artist that I will partner with

I have delivered previous projects within schools at tertiary level and through public galleries to high school students. These workshops included comic book inking, surrealist drawing and figure drawing. My practical experience as an exhibiting artist has included galleries in Hamilton, Tauranga, Rotorua and Auckland. My work has been exhibited in New York and Scotland. I have been heavily involved in exhibitions as both a practicing artist and a curator since 2010 and this has been in both private and public art spaces.

Describe the experience you have had working with children or young people, teaching or facilitating creative processes

I have four years’ experience teaching within tertiary institutes. Here I would teach large classes on collaborative projects where they would cross disciplines to deliver a real world outcome; contemporary drawing, illustration and storytelling, graphic design, painting and sculpture. In addition to teaching adults I have delivered multiple workshops to high school students on comic book inking and risograph printing at a local gallery. I also worked for a local creative entity as a Creative Development agent. My work here was in facilitating workshops with artists and art groups on governance, strategic planning, project planning, funding and finance, promotion and marketing and touring. In these workshops I would employ the same skills from my teaching roles.

Why I want to be part of the Creatives in Schools programme and how my involvement will link to my creative practice

For many years I have been following a clear path in the arts; by clear I mean that it was very simple for me that this is the world I wanted to be involved in. After my education and practicing as an artist and curator for several years I found work in education, which was complementary with my art practice. Within a few months my passion for ‘making’ and the arts was met with a passion for teaching. I found working with students and sharing my knowledge, experience and joy for art was highly addictive and rewarding. My interest in being a part of Creatives in Schools is to allow me to continue teaching and working in education which I have developed a love for and to continue a path of self-reflection through art that is strengthened by sharing discoveries with students.
