My arts or creative practice (including details about my specific focus within that art form/practice and my strengths)

I am primarily a performer (harp), but I am also a composer and a teacher. With all of these areas I work a lot with engaging children and creating a safe and welcoming environment for their creative practices.

My track record of experience and success - or the track record of experience and success of the creative or artist that I will partner with

I have a postgraduate degree in performance harp and instrumental/vocal composition from the NZ School of Music. I won a community commission to create a community piece for the Auckland Harp Orchestra. I work as a professional musician with all the major NZ orchestras. I record for many different musical groups and singers and I am requested at all sorts of public and private events. I frequently perform as part of small chamber music groups and also frequently perform solo concerts.

Describe the experience you have had working with children or young people, teaching or facilitating creative processes

I have been teaching music to children and adults for the last 10 years. Ages ranging from age 5-80+. I used to teach music at Saturday morning music classes. These are group sessions. My groups were the youngest in the programme. I now teach private students and really focus on understanding their individual needs. A common theme for young students is the need to break away from just playing "everything perfectly". I have been trying to develop ways of exploring creativity in music, and this has led to teaching children how to improvise and create their own music and their own sound.

Why I want to be part of the Creatives in Schools programme and how my involvement will link to my creative practice

I am interested in being part of the Creatives in Schools programme because I think that bringing music into schools can really help with a child’s development and sense of belonging. The knowledge that the children can learn how to teach themselves and find new ways to express themselves is very satisfying. The creatives in schools will link to my creative practice as it will help me explore my creative musical ideas around group performance and improvisation/composition.
