My arts or creative practice (including details about my specific focus within that art form/practice and my strengths)

I'm a visual artist with major disciplines in painting and photography. I also use film, digital art, and craft and sculpture, depending on the project. My subject matter usually centres around nature: New Zealand landscapes, seascapes, bird life and textures; but I also create abstract works as well. I have participated in several community arts projects, created murals, and volunteer with the local school helping out in their art class. I have taught art and photography workshops, and provided creative services to the Wellington film industry.

My track record of experience and success - or the track record of experience and success of the creative or artist that I will partner with

I graduated in 2002 with a Bachelor of Design, majoring in Visual Communication. I have exhibited in galleries in Auckland and Wellington, including two solo shows, multiple group shows, and two shows that I organised and curated (plus a further two that I co-curated). I sold more than 13 works at one of my solo shows, and enjoyed an ongoing relationship with a gallery in Thorndon for several years, with regular sales. In 2011 I received the Wellington Emerging Artist of the Year award (painting section). In 2014 I received positive critical reviews for my exhibition 'Geographica'.

Describe the experience you have had working with children or young people, teaching or facilitating creative processes

I have held creative classes (arts and photography) for adults and children at The Lakehouse Arts Centre and Mairangi Bay Arts Centre (both in Auckland). I was a camp counsellor at Camp Emerson in Massachusetts, USA; I ran the photography department and worked with students aged 8-15 years old. I am current volunteer for Island Bay School, assisting with their 'Freedom Friday' program art class (students aged 5-10 years old).

Why I want to be part of the Creatives in Schools programme and how my involvement will link to my creative practice

I like to use my creativity to benefit the community in any way I can. I enjoy helping children to express their own creativity. My creative practice is linked to my sense of place, so it makes sense to me to maintain and nurture connections with members of my community (of all ages), and for us to express together what it means to live in the place that we do. It's about a sense of identity within a local community. I think this notion is really important for children in particular.
