My arts or creative practice (including details about my specific focus within that art form/practice and my strengths)

I offer creative, interactive music sessions for pre-school and young primary children. Through fun group music I teach singing, rhythm and develop young children's listening skills and musical expression. For older primary ages I offer songwriting workshops- working with children to encourage and develop their unique voice in writing lyrics and melody. I can also support the children to write a 'School Anthem' - a song especially for their school to sing with pride with lyrics written by their own students.

My track record of experience and success - or the track record of experience and success of the creative or artist that I will partner with

I have been a songwriter and performing artist in the Children's genre for eight years and my original songs are sung in many schools around New Zealand. In 2020, I have been awarded a grant from Creative New Zealand for an album of original children's songs which I am currently working on and looking forward to releasing in September. I also appeared on the award winning podcast 'Moe Makes Music' for an episode featuring my song. Two of my original songs have been published as a book, with another book due out at the end of the year.

Describe the experience you have had working with children or young people, teaching or facilitating creative processes

A mother of three young children (ages 8, 5, and 3) I am constantly inspired by children within my creative practice. Currently I take online music lessons for ages 0-7 and also perform regularly at community groups, schools, pre-schools, birthday parties, and libraries. Many of my songs focus on putting a positive spin on tricky situations. During the Level 4 in New Zealand I released three songs that helped children process the lockdown in a positive way. I am passionate about using music as a tool for children's well-being.

Why I want to be part of the Creatives in Schools programme and how my involvement will link to my creative practice

My creative practice is focussed on helping children find connection and well-being through music. Music sessions help with language, numeracy, literacy, and coordination- but also relieves stress and helps children to regulate emotions. It is also a wonderful communication tool for children to express themselves. All while having fun!
