My arts or creative practice (including details about my specific focus within that art form/practice and my strengths)

My BA Maunga Kura Toi (Bachelor of Māori Art) has given me the rangahau and theory behind delivering and completing art. I have been a full-time artist for over 10 years and specialise in carving, sculpture, and painting. I love to work in glass, native timber and large pieces. I have completed community murals, held solo and group exhibitions and also a collaborative art project of a huge scale for one of the local Kahui Ako. I am also interested in jewellery making. Art is more than just the skill of the art work, but it is about connecting with people, learning about yourself and relating your art to your hopes, feelings, and aspirations. I aim to deliver projects that utilise the student's skill, environment and interests. Students lead with them as the driver and me assisting with materials and techniques.

My track record of experience and success - or the track record of experience and success of the creative or artist that I will partner with

  • Diploma Fine Art 1999
  • BA Maunga Kura Toi ( 2015-2018)
  • Carver for Kahuia Ako Collaborative Project

Describe the experience you have had working with children or young people, teaching or facilitating creative processes

I have been a rugby and soccer coach for over 15 years. Coaching children from ages 6 to 18. I am a father of two children and have been a stay-at-home dad the whole time (they are now 15 and 18). I am still the person fully responsible for their care. I have worked as the creative for the local Kahui Ako - this included playcentres and high schools (age range 1-18). I like to explore environmental issues and use these to produce my art, recycling, upcycling, toxic waste etc. I have worked with students over the years producing murals at the high school.

Why I want to be part of the Creatives in Schools programme and how my involvement will link to my creative practice

Having completed one project I can speak with experience. Being around children who are nervous about art and then seeing the change in their confidence is rewarding. Seeing theskills and passion the children have, being part of helping them learn and leaving a legacy piece of artwork. I am at an age where I can give back to the community. I have the time, the skills, and the passion.
