My arts or creative practice (including details about my specific focus within that art form/practice and my strengths)

My creative practice embraces art object making (elemental) as well as moving-image (electronic) art forms. In my chosen fields of art-making - resiliency, empathy, and tolerance are natural by-products of creative expressions. I have studied at the Princes School of Traditional Arts in London, where art from varied religious, indigenous, and ancient sacred traditions are respected, preserved, and enlivened in the modern world. I also have a degree in Computer Art, and I have a career as a professional film-maker.

  • ELEMENTAL VISUAL ART: I have taught students how to make their own pigments, how to draw using geometry, how to use egg-tempera paint.
  • ELECTRONIC VISUAL ART: I have taught students narrative film-making, documentary, animation, and digital design.

My track record of experience and success - or the track record of experience and success of the creative or artist that I will partner with

  • 25 years as a practitioner in the New Zealand film and television industry (Production Designer, Editor, Art Director, Director, Producer)
  • Regularly exhibit in group exhibitions. One solo exhibition.
  • Recently returned from an Artist Residency in Finland.
  • Training in video editing and design
  • Expert in Adobe software
  • Training in scriptwriting
  • Training in 'sacred art' making
  • Tutor of short courses in various schools throughout South Island, and for the public in digital arts.

Describe the experience you have had working with children or young people, teaching or facilitating creative processes

  • Taught art and digital design 2-4 day courses in high schools (13-18).
  • Taught short courses at a primary school (11-12) in tempera painting.
  • Have worked with children in various documentary and narrative film projects.

Why I want to be part of the Creatives in Schools programme and how my involvement will link to my creative practice

I have knowledge to share, and believe in the importance of creative practice to encourage greater tolerance and empathy in society. I am also wanting to explore the creation of a 'Breath of Compassion' tesselation or mosaic installation (from the Islamic tradition). This traditional design is an opportunity for every child (5-18) in a school to participate in the creation of an artwork which could express earth and humanity in all its diversity.
