My arts or creative practice (including details about my specific focus within that art form/practice and my strengths)

I'm primarily a fiction writer. My debut novel is being published in August 2020. I also write essays with a personal lean and often about the visual arts. I’ve recently had pieces published by The Spinoff, Newsroom, and Contemporary HUM. I spent four years teaching writing (fiction and academic) at the University of Florida, and I enjoy working with students in both a group and one-on-one setting. I’m also the founding editor and publisher of a company which started as an art and literary print journal in 2007, and then evolved to publishing full-length books.

My track record of experience and success - or the track record of experience and success of the creative or artist that I will partner with

I have a MFA in Fiction from the University of Florida and MA in Fiction from the International Institute of Modern Letters at Victoria University of Wellington. My debut novel is being published in August 2020. I’ve also recently had essays published by The Spinoff, Newsroom, Contemporary HUM, and the US literary journal Subtropics. As the founding editor and publisher of a publishing company, I’ve published well-reviewed books of poetry and essays, with one poetry collection being selected as a finalist at the New Zealand Book Awards.

Describe the experience you have had working with children or young people, teaching or facilitating creative processes

I spent four years teaching at the University of Florida from 2014-2017. I taught a range of writing courses including fiction. In terms of the age groups I worked with, I taught students who were in their first semester of study, right up to students who were finishing their undergraduate degrees. In the classroom I conducted exercises, facilitated group discussions about published stories, encouraged students to read their own work out loud, and managed workshops where students helpfully critiqued each other’s writing.

Why I want to be part of the Creatives in Schools programme and how my involvement will link to my creative practice

I love teaching! I love being able to introduce students to new things - stories and art. And I love what I learn from working with young and engaged minds. The arts subjects I took in school contributed a lot to my personal growth, and helped me to figure out who I was and who I wanted to be. The friends I made in those classes are still some of my closest friends. I would also love to be able to contribute to my local community, and this is one of the ways I can do that.
