My arts or creative practice (including details about my specific focus within that art form/practice and my strengths)

I have a wide base of creative experience, originally trained as a graphic designer and then morphing to props and model-making for film and advertising. Since 2012 I've been designing garments for World of Wearable Arts. I've been a finalist 10 times and won two awards. I have also been involved in making a short film as art director, location scout, and graphics. It is currently doing the rounds at international festivals and won awards for script and cinematography and also won best short film. This year the WOW show has been cancelled due to Covid-19, so I now find myself with much more time to be able to pursue this kind of work.

My track record of experience and success - or the track record of experience and success of the creative or artist that I will partner with

I have many years experience as a Graphic Designer: 1993 - current. In 2007 I worked at Weta Workshop and then Human Dynamo in Miramar, making props and models for film and advertising. I've also been involved in making a local short film which has won numerous prizes here and overseas - 2020 Best Screenplay, Best Cinematography, Best Short Film. Since 2012 I've been a 10-time finalist in various categories of World of Wearable Arts; 2013 Winner, 2019 Third Place.

Describe the experience you have had working with children or young people, teaching or facilitating creative processes

I really enjoy working with young people of any age - I have three teenage daughters and have done a few career talks over the years. Last year I was approached by WOW to speak to children (aged 8-12) for a Capital E school holiday programme about Wearable Arts. I created a presentation about 'Inspiration' and showed them pictures and an actual garment, made from recycled materials. There was a Q and A session and they then went on to make their own amazing inspirational
garments. About three years ago I worked with students (aged 11/12) on a three-week module of Wearable Arts, starting with a presentation of garments. I worked with them over the following three weeks on their own projects and provided some of my own materials I've collected over the years. (My husband was thrilled as I removed three carloads from the attic in the process!)

Why I want to be part of the Creatives in Schools programme and how my involvement will link to my creative practice

My parents both are highly creative and I learn lots from them. One hot day, as a child I asked my dad if we could turn our balcony into a swimming pool. Instead of fobbing me off, he had a little think, put a plank of wood down, and lined the area with plastic, got the hose out and filled it up! There are children who have raw talent, passion, and determination in the creative sphere. I know how important it is for them to have someone who notices them, encourages them, and shows them possibilities. I have been lucky enough to get (and make) opportunities throughout my life, in a very competitive industry. If I can inspire others to pursue their dreams this would make me so happy too.
