My arts or creative practice (including details about my specific focus within that art form/practice and my strengths)

My practice is mainly in painting. I am a contemporary painter who has in the past painted large New Zealand bird portraits and these are sourced from the museum. I now paint a range of imagery that is also figurative and landscape based. I depict with my paintings local landscapes. Written below these landscapes is scripture from the Paipera tapu which reference the eternal nature of the land, faith, and the relationship we with each other in our bi-cultural nationhood. I also paint large New Zealand bird portraits and these are sourced from the museum.

My track record of experience and success - or the track record of experience and success of the creative or artist that I will partner with

I am a exhibiting artist with 16 solo shows and numerous selected group shows to my credit. I have been the recipient of several national art awards such as the Norsewear Art awards premier award in 2003 and the Molly Morpeth prize winner in 2004.

Describe the experience you have had working with children or young people, teaching or facilitating creative processes

I have been a secondary school art teacher for 18 years. I have also taught in Area schools and a secondary school where I have taught students in the year 7 to 8 range. I have taught in a diverse range of secondary schools from private schools to rural schools throughout New Zealand. My strength is my ability to adapt my teaching to the range of learning styles and backgrounds that students bring to the learning of Art. I seek in my teaching to articulate and demonstrate how experiences provide unique ways for individuals to express themselves and their environment. I have taught themes that reflect the background and experiences of students. For example, the theme of the year 11 programme I am teaching at the moment is 'My self and my
environment'. In the integrated learning unit for year 9 I am teaching it is 'How to feed the community with diminishing resources'.

Why I want to be part of the Creatives in Schools programme and how my involvement will link to my creative practice

I am interested in being accessible as an artist that also has a wealth of teaching experience. My work expresses how images of New Zealand and bird portraits are ways in which our young can identify with our national identity.
