Describe the experience you have had working with children or young people, teaching or facilitating creative processes

I have experience, working with groups of youth from different ethnicities, experiences, social and health challenges. Community sites have been low decile schools and community youth-focused providers e.g. Te Hou Ora Whānau Services Dunedin. I continue to design creative art programmes, which use arts to focus on salient issues e.g. bullying in school, growing champions in schools as role models for new entrants. Art programmes for stopping violence in Dunedin, as a medium of counselling young people. Designed programmes, which combined art and games. Gamification to enable teams to cooperate and pit their efficiency against other teams in the group. Combined indigenous art forms and collaborated with other artists to support the youth programmes.

Why I want to be part of the Creatives in Schools programme and how my involvement will link to my creative practice

I have noticed that youth are more complex than when I was one. The ubiquitous use of smart phones. Devices for streaming all that is creative and destructive. The malady of illnesses I have seen with young people I have and continue to work with. The malaise and obfuscated glaze over the eyes. Symptoms of trauma and stress young people should not have to bear. The burden on schools to field these issues. The need to see schools as different than 'Tom Brown's School Days'. Regardless of all our thinking around this, schools are social community environments for our young, where they spend all of their important experiences, which will define their future. This cannot be left to the responsibility of just teachers. My passion is to be part of a change, slowly but surely, working with schools develop and support the growth of our youth.
