My arts or creative practice (including details about my specific focus within that art form/practice and my strengths)
I am a skilled fibre weaver (taught as a child by skilled weavers). Weaving is my passion which I continue to do and being creative. I use many fibre types including pandanus, coconut leaves, other palm leaves and my current focus, harakeke/flax. My strength is knowing how to use the material, understanding the artistic process of a project, and also the ability to teach. Some of my work can be viewed via my Facebook page. A radio interview although in pidgin English is decipherable where I talked about my weaving work and the importance of sharing the skill.
My track record of experience and success - or the track record of experience and success of the creative or artist that I will partner with
- I have worked in schools on class art projects or through a REAP programme working on a class multi-media work and weaving.
- I have participated in Arts for Schools where artists were placed in private gardens for the paying public to view.
- I have exhibited in museums and as an Artist in residence during an exhibition at an art space in Porirua.
- I have sold works privately, to craft/tourist shops and customers including at an outlet for NZ-made arts/craft.
- I have run weaving (flax weaving) workshops for interested people before and run workshops in the summer months.
- As a trained Primary and ECE teacher (fully registered) I have continued to use my skills and understand the different level of skills and ability of children and can modify the work to suit all ages.
Describe the experience you have had working with children or young people, teaching or facilitating creative processes
As a fully qualified and registered teacher (Primary and ECE) I have worked with children of all ages, teaching or facilitating many art experiences. From weaving to fabric artwork. Using project approaches we worked and learned about the importance of the creative process. I also experienced that not everyone will have the same enthusiasm of their peers. Weaving is manipulative, is mathematical and covers a range of skills across the curriculum (ECE - Primary) - commumication -social collaboration, literacy - new words, and the Arts - music, drama, and so on. Of the various art projects/activities I have worked on with children the things I enjoy are the genuine interest expressed, sharing in discussion
Why I want to be part of the Creatives in Schools programme and how my involvement will link to my creative practice
I want to be a part of the Creatives in Schools programme because I want to share my skills with others; I want to share my love and passion of my art with others. Art is fun and there is so much both artist and learners can benefit from as they create. I love what I do and by being involved in the Creatives in Schools Programme I believe will pass on many skills and knowledge of my kind of art to the learners. As a trained teacher I understand the creative process of art. I believe in having good, trusting and supportive relationships with children, families and the community. I am aware of people’s differences and respecting the diversity we have is a good start to having good relationships with others. Maintaining relationships is through open communication, collaboratively working with families and whānau giving children a sense of belonging and working together for the child.
