I am primarily a painter, but I also have skills in printmaking. My most well-known work features old chairs on the front porches of old houses. More recently I am moving into painting landscapes. I teach all forms of visual art to children as part of my art classes programme.

I graduated from Elam School of Fine Arts with a degree majoring in painting. I have since had a strong career as a practising artist, exhibiting work in multiple solo exhibitions at a gallery in Auckland. My work hangs in collections throughout New Zealand and overseas and has been published in two volumes of NZ Art Today. I achieved the top scholar award for painting in my final year of high school.
Describe the experience you have had working with children or young people, teaching or facilitating creative processes
I have had many years of experience with children’s art projects, which has lead to a keen awareness of creative development in children. I launched my own business five years ago. I run after-school classes and holiday workshops for children from 5 to 12 years old. It has been very successful and is well-regarded in my local community. I have been involved with groups of children at the local intermediate school as well as the local drama group to facilitate the creation of sets for their drama productions. I believe strongly in the ability of imaginative and creative work to develop the brain in a way that benefits all areas of learning. All of my projects with children are executed with the knowledge and understanding of this creative process and respect for individuality in children.
Why I want to be part of the Creatives in Schools programme and how my involvement will link to my creative practice
I am passionate about encouraging creativity in children as I see a huge benefit in their personal development and in all areas of learning. I already do a lot of creative work with children as part of my own practice and it is a great opportunity for more children to have the benefit of this learning that will most likely stay with them forever. I am excited about the opportunity to teach and demonstrate the value of creative processes to a wider audience.
