My arts or creative practice (including details about my specific focus within that art form/practice and my strengths)
I work part-time as a Funeral Assistant to support myself and write and make films and plays the rest of the time. I have some children's plays under development. I have a background in Early Childhood Education, Adult Teaching and Community Education. I love walking alongside learners sharing my skills and their knowledge to help build a new awareness and understanding. I particularly like working with children of all ages, because of their enthusiasm and great brains! I taught scriptwriting for a group of English teachers in the Cook Islands so they could pass on the knowledge and processes to their students.
My track record of experience and success - or the track record of experience and success of the creative or artist that I will partner with
I am a scriptwriter. I studied for my Masters of Scriptwriting in 2014 winning a scholarship for my thesis project (a feature film script). Since then I have been writing plays and film scripts. My play was workshopped at Circa in 2018. I have also had a short play in the final of a competition in 2016. I wrote and directed a short film, which has screened at NZIFF and Show Me Shorts Film Festival this year. I won the Final Draft Best Screenplay Award for the script of the short film. Earlier this year a short film script of mine was made into a short film by film students of a University Masters Programme. I love scriptwriting. How I can make a story into a script that then can come alive as a film or play. It is a kind of magic, and I'd like to share this magic with children and teenagers.
Describe the experience you have had working with children or young people, teaching or facilitating creative processes
Originally my career was as a Floor Manager in media but when I had children I became involved with Playcentre and trained to be a Supervisor. This led me to jobs working with people to help them find their way in life (Careers Adviser and Budget Adviser) adults and young adults about flatting, cooking on a budget and Te Tiriti o Waitangi. I also worked writing Science resources for young children (their parents were their teachers). I have an adult teaching certificate and early childhood teaching qualification. My motto for teaching is "find the students' passion and follow it". I particularly love story. I understand that everyone is a storyteller and learner through stories. I like to teach scriptwriting as coding a story that can be then brought to life.
Why I want to be part of the Creatives in Schools programme and how my involvement will link to my creative practice
I really admire the teachers who work with young people to help them find out who they are and what their interests are as well as equipping them with appropriate skills for their future. I love working alongside young people and helping their creativity grow. They have such fresh innovative ideas and I'd love to help them put those ideas into a form to share with others. I love playing in my work (it's the way I learn) so want to share that playful, fun way to be creative with the kids, who could teach me more about playing and fun!
