Intended outcomes

  • Distinguish between different sounds (PK).
  • Explore sounds and use appropriate language to describe their characteristics (PK, UC).
  • Identify patterns (PK).

Track 4: 'Imbal Imbalan'

Resource: Into Music 2 (published by Learning Media )

Activities

  • Discuss the contrasts in tone colour within the piece, and find similar sounds by experimenting with classroom instruments, such as xylophones and metallophones.
  • Discuss what the instruments used in the piece might be made of, and how they might be played.
  • Listen for repeated patterns (ostinati) and share these with a partner, using gestures only.
  • Without speaking, work with a partner to find a new pattern.
  • Find out about gamelan or other kinds of South East Asian music.

Extension activities

  • Create a graphic score of the three identified ostinati.
  • Play the score, using appropriate classroom instruments.
  • In small groups, create a layered ostinati piece.

  • Can you hear any specific sounds?

Creative writing/drawing activity

  • What kind of creature would breathe with an iron lung?

Dance/drama activities

  • Using dance and movement, create an iron lung that moves to the pace of the music.
  • Create a dramatic story (perhaps a mime) about the music, and perform it for the class.

Extension activity

  • Find another example of electronic music by David Downes, and listen to it.
  • Discuss any links or similarities between it and 'Iron Lung'.

  • What is the style of this music?
  • What about the style stands out the most for you?
  • Compare the two vocalists – how do their styles differ?
  • Discuss the lyrics of this song and come up with a shared understanding of their meaning:
    • What images stand out?
    • How does the music give expression the lyrics?
  • What is a riff? Find some examples of riffs in other music that you know, and share them with the class.
  • Find out about New Zealand hip-hop music in general, and about Che Fu and DLT in particular.
  • Make a poster advertising a show by Che Fu and DLT – try to make it look as 'hip-hop' as possible.
