Use a digital camera to record portraits of the students. If possible use a strong light source to create strong shadows. This could be accomplished by actually having a lamp as a light source (You can also then manipulate the photo using the contrast on your computer). Print the images to A4 size, and place tracing paper over it and draw around the outline of the image and the tonal areas. Alternatively, photocopy the image and place it on a light box or a window pane to trace the outlines.
Make photocopies of these outline drawings and use a vivid to explore a variety of ways of showing dark and light areas. Revisit the examples of Expressionist woodblock prints to remind students of the ways they can use strong line and techniques such as crosshatching to show tone.
Also look at the ways you can treat the background.
