Kapa Haka Festival Gala – Okaiawa Primary School

How the small rural school of Okaiawa initiated, organised, and ran a kapa haka festival gala for total immersion and mainstream schools in the local area.

School and teachers

Okaiawa is a decile 3 school with 21 students – one third of whom are Māori. This is a sole charge school in rural Taranaki and has a social worker attached to the school. The teacher aide/kaiako and the social worker support, promote, and teach tikanga Māori in the school.

Purpose and outcomes

The purpose was to:

  • provide opportunities for increased understanding of Māori culture through arts participation;
  • give many local schools, both mainstream and total immersion, an opportunity to participate in a kapa haka festival;
  • provide a purpose for students' involvement in kapa haka;
  • provide a focus for the gala day.
