Waitakere College

Region: Auckland

Art form: Circus Arts

Project name: Circus Inclusion

Creative name: Circability

Project information:

Outcomes for students and ākonga: The IEPs are written with the learning outcomes focusing on the key competencies. Circus Inclusion forms an integral part of the class programme, particularly focusing on class and group participation. The circus teachers are aware of the students’ individual goals and tailor the creative programme to work towards achieving these. These students leave school with the confidence to live rich and independent lives.

Outcomes for teachers and kaiako: The Inclusion Support Centre is a facility where students with special educational needs can grow emotionally, socially, cognitively, and physically in a challenging and supportive environment with maximum contact with their peers.

Outcomes for creatives: For the disabled artists/performers who delivered the project it was an opportunity to perform and be paid for their work. Community circus arts are all about the people. The project contributed to the whānau and school community, empowering artists and creative practitioners by removing barriers, sharing experiences, and working with and alongside disabled students in an inclusive environment.

Outcomes for parents and whānau: We are a learning-focused, student-centred and family-friendly centre. We have high expectations of students and staff to attain achievement for all. Our students leave the Inclusion Support Centre having gained as much independence as possible.
