Project name: Developing Language Through Animation and Film

Project information:

Outcomes for students and ākonga: The students had the opportunity to experience language development in a different form and present their ideas creatively, working alongside a mentor. This project has helped develop a sense of worth for their ideas, thoughts, and stories. Students worked with the creative to explore their cultural identity and were strengthened through their association with a strong role model. They now have a greater knowledge of how they can use film and animation to express their ideas and knowledge. They gained success through having their work showcased and recognised by their whānau, peers, and teachers. These students have gone on to ‘teach’ others how to use the apps and spread their skills across the school.

Outcomes for teachers and kaiako: This project provided a platform for teachers to show how visual language can be used to support reluctant learners and how imagination and ideas can be expressed when traditional boundaries are removed. The association with Munro strengthened the place of success for Māori and Pacific boys in a program such as this.

Outcomes for creative: The creative provided a strong Māori male role model in teaching skills and built a partnership that we hope will continue to springboard our students into film and animation as a way of expressing their message. 

Outcomes for parents and whānau: Parents recognised how creative pathways allowed students to express their ideas and further explore the opportunities this creates, unlocking creative and visual ways that they can present their work. Parents have seen their children’s success in sharing their messages and it has shown them how success in language can be attained for reluctant students.
