Taita College
Region: Wellington
Art form: Visual Art and Contemporary Māori Practices
Project name: One Heart, One Beat
Creative name: Chevron Hassett
Project information: One Heart, One Beat, referring to Taita College’s motto, is a rangatahi-centric kaupapa, focused on providing professional quality arts - access and participation, engagement with higher education, cultural development (kaupapa māori) and industry interaction. During the kaupapa students from Taita aged between 15–18 will participate in multiple art and cultural wānanga with an artist, writer, and community worker who was raised in the area, making for a tuakana – teina scenario. Our creative wishes to use kaupapa māori and practice of whanaungatanga to collaborate with the students to produce a series of lens-based works of landscapes and portraits, either installed publically in the school or displayed as an exhibition, which upholds the essence and mana of the students, their cultures, and the wider community for generations to come. This is a valuable opportunity for the young students to learn new perspectives, engage deeper within their local and cultural environment, and develop critical understandings of connection to place, while having the ability to work with someone of the same background. Making for one heart, one beat.
