Region: Canterbury
Art form: Public programming and Visual arts
Project name: My museum guidebook
Creative name: Holly Cunningham
Project information: An art curator, researcher, programme developer, and museum professional will lead a programme with two well-known Banks Peninsula artists to work with the students from Okains Bay School to create their own personalised museum guide book of the taonga from the Okains Bay Museum collection. Tamariki will learn about museum public programmes and exhibitions, have guided tours with the Museum’s director staff along with the creative and a representative from the school’s marae at Koukourarata. The Koukourarata marae representative will help the students with their pepeha / a mihi for their museum guide to the collection and speak about the significance of the taonga Māori in the Museum collection. Each page of the student’s museum guide will show a unique creative response to the taonga/museum objects that have inspired them with a sentence or two about why they chose that item. Two Banks Peninsula artists recognised for their skills in photography, printing, drawing, painting, and graphic design will take four-hour workshops with the students in each media to create a page of their guide which will be added with a museum map to their guide.
