I have taught Art in Melbourne, London and Auckland and have had many years' experience in painting/mural, multimedia sculpture, design and ceramics.

I am an Auckland-based multimedia artist, specialising in applied art. Born in London, raised and educated in New Zealand, I spent a number of years living in Europe and Australia, working in theatre, television and art teaching. I have exhibited my work in New Zealand, Zurich, London and Barcelona. On returning to New Zealand, I established an innovation and education programme where I work on the redesign of outdoor learning and play environments in schools and parks. I was a finalist for the Wallace Arts Trust Paramount Award and am an Artist in Residence at the Corban Estate Arts Centre.
Describe the experience you have had working with children or young people, teaching or facilitating creative processes
I embed as many life skills needed to have a career in the arts as possible for children in the projects. Students create something that they can identify with, feel proud of and are involved in a project larger than themselves. Pupils directly involved in these projects receive a certificate of excellence or completion, with imagery demonstrating work they have done. This is important work evidence for future employment and for students to have the confidence to study further. Students have a greater understanding of the cultural stories of the land their school stands on. Innovative thinkers - Students co-create enjoying working together or contribute as individuals. Projects are high quality, completed within a time frame, budget and comply with the school vision. Points considered - Cultural heritage, empathy, social resilience.
Why I want to be part of the Creatives in Schools programme and how my involvement will link to my creative practice
I am interested in the Creatives in Schools Programme because I co-design creative play spaces for children by children. Schools can be nervous about carrying out their design once it is drawn up as they have simply paid for the plan. For example a music wall, murals, sensory gardens are plotted on the design but are completely open to the school's interpretation of what they want in that space. Creatives in Schools is a perfect fit for me to engage children, teachers, local community in the completion of the design projects marked out on the plan of the playground (but not developed). A school community working creatively together has an opportunity to give children impactful memories and skills. These experiences assist youths/adults to confidently make the building blocks necessary for positive futures.
