My arts or creative practice (including details about my specific focus within that art form/practice and my strengths)

Kia ora. I am a second-generation artist. My father has been a self-employed artist for over 40 years carving wood, bone, shell and stone. I learned carving and making from a young age but my primary medium is stone carving. Any material, any size. To work with a permanent material requires telling stories worth telling. To know where you are going, you need to know where you come from. Same goes for any idea or concept you are working with. I am an avid learner of many interests and currently, developing my understanding of Tā Moko designs and digital design technology. Most of my working life has been in the Building Industry and I am now in the process of transitioning to a full-time artist. I completed a sculpture project for Nelson City Council. The scope of the project was diverse and deployed a wide range of my skill base. I designed and was involved in every aspect of the process.

My track record of experience and success - or the track record of experience and success of the creative or artist that I will partner with

Describe the experience you have had working with children or young people, teaching or facilitating creative processes

  • Firstly I'm a parent! This has involved (learning) teaching, facilitating the processes of life creatively from birth to current ages! 11 and 13.
  • I have been involved twice with secondary school groups (6 and 25+) for a single session of limestone carving. On both occasions it was surprising just how engaged and focused they were in the process of making.
  • All the way along, from running a Youth Music Venue, playing music, Carpentry, Carving, Community projects, I have always had interest in facilitating and nurturing others' creative journey.
  • The 'theme' I work in comes from working in stone. To work with a permanent material that transcends time comes with a responsibility for telling stories worth telling. To know where you are going, you need to know where you have come from. Same goes for any idea or concept you are working with.

Why I want to be part of the Creatives in Schools programme and how my involvement will link to my creative practice

Studies show the many benefits of activities that integrate left and right hemispheres of the brain. The practice of creating is something I benefit from and can benefit others with. Sharing this seems natural. As with parenthood, there is much learning involved in the process of teaching.
