I am a filmmaker and photographer. I grew up in Dunedin and throughout primary school and high school my best friend and I used to make our own movies. We got recognition for them through The Outlook For Someday film competition and won awards for our films three years in a row. After high school I moved to Berlin where I got an internship with an all-female-run film production company and I was their assistant. I picked up different freelance jobs in Berlin and since moving back to New Zealand I have shot my own short drama film with my niece and her best friend.

Describe the experience you have had working with children or young people, teaching or facilitating creative processes
I have previous experience teaching kids with the Outlook For Someday workshop in 2012 and 2013. The age group of the participants was 7-13 years. We were teaching the kids about what sustainability means to them and the practical skills of planning, filming, and editing a short film. This year I was part of a workshop teaching youth about using social media as an activist platform and how to create content which is engaging and political. We then went on to create a film on Abortion Rights in New Zealand with the people from the workshop. Their age group was 15-23 years. This year I also wrote and directed a short film with two nine-year-olds as the lead actors. I actually wrote the script for my niece to play the main character. It was the most rewarding shoot working with them both and on the last day they made us a cake with 'thank you' written on a piece of paper and stuck in with toothpicks.
Why I want to be part of the Creatives in Schools programme and how my involvement will link to my creative practice
My best school memories are when teachers were patient and explained things in a way to me which encouraged and taught me how to voice my own stories and ideas. I would love to pass on the skills to give kids the skills to tell their own stories and communicate their own ideas. I think film is such a powerful and rewarding way for kids to learn and share.
