Ideally I'd like to work within cycling distance from my home in Point Chevalier to be aligned with my low-carbon art practice. So inner-west suburbs and CBD including Point Chevalier, Western Springs, Mount Albert, Waterview, CBD, Westmere, Grey Lynn, Avondale, Mount Eden, Ponsonby etc.

My arts or creative practice (including details about my specific focus within that art form/practice and my strengths)

I am an interdisciplinary artist based in Tāmaki Makaurau. I work predominantly with photography, video, and sculptural installations. My current practice has a strong focus on sustainability in both content and process. I believe the arts is a great way to create inspiration and possibilities for action to become climate change ready. I'm a part-time lecturer at Unitec writing and delivering both technical and conceptual papers. I have worked with both digital and analogue cameras and printing processes and am able to teach the technical aspects of both in easily accessible ways. I can teach all aspects of photography and video, lighting, exposure, directing, filming, editing, photoshop, and animation. My strengths are that I absolutely love engaging students to find and nurture their own unique expression by sharing my own creative processes and techniques. I'm organised and used to planning to allow students to explore and extend themselves creatively, work collaboratively, and build confidence to plan, execute, and deliver ambitious and exciting art projects. I've worked collaboratively with composers, musicians, scientists, engineers, and fabricators. I understand how to manage that process and create projects where the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

My track record of experience and success - or the track record of experience and success of the creative or artist that I will partner with

I completed a BFA in 1998 and have been a practicing artist ever since. For over 25 years I have exhibited in major galleries and museums worldwide, including in New Zealand, America, Australia, the UK, Spain, Germany, and China.

I was granted the S+ART Award for Science, Art and Technology. I completed the Fulbright-Wallace residency in San Francisco. My work is held in various New Zealand art galleries. I have been represented by a gallery since 2009.

I have had three books published in 11 countries and the American edition of my second book was a finalist in the Lambda Literature awards.

Describe the experience you have had working with children or young people, teaching or facilitating creative processes

I have been teaching young people from the age of 17 since 2010 across three different visual arts degrees, BDVA, DACA, and BCE. The subjects I've covered are most aspects of photography, video, exhibition planning, contemporary arts, and career development in the arts sector. This involved all aspects of pedagogy, writing papers and briefs, delivering the content, facilitating critique sessions, and assessment and moderation. The age group I'm most used to working with is from 17 and older. I have done guest lecturing and workshops in Aotearoa and overseas. I have written and taught art workshops in Wellington and in Oxford (UK). This was mainly to adults but did include some high school students. Themes I've worked with most recently are environmental including; climate change action, social practice, local economies, low-carbon art practice, composting, draw-down of carbon into soil, food security, time banking, waste minimisation, ephemeral art, and building strong local communities.

Why I want to be part of the Creatives in Schools programme and how my involvement will link to my creative practice

The Creatives in Schools programme is an opportunity to integrate two things I love to do. Teach and make art. It would be a platform to harness the potential of young people to take on a project that uses creative expression to engage them and others in an issue they care about. Having taught for 10 years, I understand how unique the creative process is. Every student connects differently and it's about finding the key and setting up the environment for each of them to tap into their inner well of inspiration and feed off the collective energy in the classroom or studio. I've been an artist for over 20 years and I believe artistic expressions has so many benefits and is a way to understand ourselves and our relationship to the world around us. I've seen when students are fully engaged in a creative process. They lose themselves and track of time which is a transformative thing to do. It expands their ideas of what's possible, fosters access to an inexplicable and magical process that they can carry into all aspects of life. It makes their own lives richer which spills out to those around them.
