My arts or creative practice (including details about my specific focus within that art form/practice and my strengths)

My strengths are in teaching and practicing the Visual arts. After completing a Media Arts degree a few years ago I have had several exhibitions using mixed media of oils, resins and acrylics. My conceptual art revolves around environmental and cultural aspects. Over the past 20 years I have been involved in assisting teachers and students (Primary and Secondary) within the Cambridge area with their art programmes. I have also been involved with setting up the Art House. Much of my own art involves a connection with the community. I am passionate about teaching, sharing skills and connecting with both children and adults in the fields of self-expression through the arts.

My track record of experience and success - or the track record of experience and success of the creative or artist that I will partner with

  • Bachelor of Media Arts 2011 Wintec.
  • Teacher at a primary school 2000–2019.
  • Artist of fine arts.
  • Exhibiting at a gallery in Waikato.
  • Member of Waikato Society of Potters for past five years.

Describe the experience you have had working with children or young people, teaching or facilitating creative processes

  • Teacher at a primary school 2000–2019.
  • Large school sculptures, mosaics, wall murals, carving in association with Te Wānanga o Aotearoa.
  • Pinhole photography Gifted and Talented programme. Creativity and art, my specialty.
  • High school (Internship in the Art Department for paper at Wintec).

Why I want to be part of the Creatives in Schools programme and how my involvement will link to my creative practice

I am genuinely interested in keeping the practice of the arts alive in schools. So many young people don't have creative outlets for expressing themselves through art as school programmes have become so busy, specialists assisting teachers are no longer available, costs for materials restrict exploration in the arts. As such I often look for the recycle, reuse option and connect the dots with those in our local area willing to jump in and contribute.
