My arts or creative practice (including details about my specific focus within that art form/practice and my strengths)
I am an artist and sculptor working mainly in stone. I have recently moved to Wellington (Johnsonville) from the UK. I would like to register my interest in this project, and find out if there is any interest in carving in stone classes in the local area. I should be ready to work/teach/collaborate early in 2020.
My track record of experience and success - or the track record of experience and success of the creative or artist that I will partner with
I am a multi-disciplinary artist, specialising in stone sculpture. My work includes solo shows, artist residencies, commercial and public commissions, and occasional teaching. In addition to this, I have been active in several artist-led organisations and galleries around the UK. I have recently relocated with my family to Wellington, New Zealand.
Describe the experience you have had working with children or young people, teaching or facilitating creative processes
Briefly, I have taught small groups as part of 'artist in residence' posts and as a tutor in a stone carving workshops and events (all UK). The groups have varied in age from around 12 up to people in their 70s. In some cases the pupils designed their work, while others preferred to carve to a prescribed design.
Why I want to be part of the Creatives in Schools programme and how my involvement will link to my creative practice
I believe that stone carving is a useful skill that should be passed on to following generations. Whether a student follows an artistic or a masons path, such skills can give pleasure and confidence, particularly to those with a less academic mindset, and opportunities for a profitable and fulfilling career.
