My arts or creative practice (including details about my specific focus within that art form/practice and my strengths)

I am a working photographer who specialises in Black and White Landscape but also works in other genres including promotions. I have worked with schools to create promotional photography for their websites. I run courses for photographers and novices of all ages in my local area which encourage people to become active 'noticers' in their environment, enhancing their skills to achieve the best shots possible, then assist them with learning systems to process their art post-shoot. In my spare time, I am a part-time teacher aide at my local school where I work with students across the school-age range. Recently, I have supported senior students completing a project to develop road signage promoting the principles of 'Students against dangerous driving', I assisted them in taking professional quality photographs and in post-production for local billboards.

My track record of experience and success - or the track record of experience and success of the creative or artist that I will partner with

As a working professional photographer, I have developed and created exhibitions of my work and sell prints professionally on my website. I have a level 5 qualification in Photography from Aoraki Polytechnic and have been working with photography as a hobby and eventual career for about 15 years. As I work part-time in a school and run photography courses in the form of tours, I am able to co-design and deliver an agreed outcome with students of all ages. I have worked in schools in the capacity of photographer for promotional materials, and in working with students to design and deliver a specific outcome. I can tailor programmes for different ages and abilities. As the father of an 18-year-old university student, and a 10-year-old primary student I have a good working knowledge of 'ages and stages' and NCEA.

Describe the experience you have had working with children or young people, teaching or facilitating creative processes

I run courses for photographers and novices of all ages in my local area which encourage people to become active 'noticers' in their environment, enhancing their skills to achieve the best shots possible, then assist them with learning systems to process their art post-shoot. I am keen to work with students in the outdoors to promote appreciation and understanding of the beauty of their environment. As a part-time teacher aide at my local school, I work with students across the school-age range (year 1–13). Recently, I have supported senior students completing a project to develop road signage promoting the principles of 'Students against dangerous driving', I assisted them in taking professional quality photographs and in post-production for local billboards. Similar projects or competition work where outcomes can be co-constructed with students would be possible. I would also be interested in partnering with a school to assist students in developing the skills to create their own promotional photographs for their school or website, possibly even helping students to get the best shots for their yearbook or similar 'meaty' project.

Why I want to be part of the Creatives in Schools programme and how my involvement will link to my creative practice

I am interested in partnering with a school to enhance the local curriculum and connections within and outside the school. I would love to work with young people to foster a joy of working out in their local environment, noticing and focusing on the beauty of nature. I believe that being out in nature and capturing the amazing, unique beauty of the local environment enhances well-being, resilience and empathy. To assist students in finding that moment of joy and achievement in capturing a one-off moment, or processing their art to a high quality can make an enormous difference to all individuals. Promoting creative industries as a viable career pathway is important to me, as is connecting with others in the field.
