My arts or creative practice (including details about my specific focus within that art form/practice and my strengths)

I have been a practicing artist since 1986, working in conte, graphite, pastels, oils and acrylics. The focus of my work is to reconnect humans with nature – our Mother – through quiet contemplation and within an inclusive spiritual context, my work celebrates the beautiful around us and explores the possibilities of elemental influence on the way our precious planet lives and the relationship between humans and Otherworld archetypes. My work revives mythology and explores its import in the health of the human psyche as well as in our relationship with the Web of life.

My track record of experience and success - or the track record of experience and success of the creative or artist that I will partner with

I have recently held my fifth solo exhibition, selling over half the show on the opening night. I first started showing my own work solo in 1999 – my fourth exhibition featured on Nightline (TV3) in 2004. I have participated in over 34 group exhibitions. I worked full time as an illustrator in Ireland for four years and have done occasional illustration work in NZ since then including illustrating a book which was shortlisted in the NZ Children's Book Awards. I began portrait work in 1986 and have continued through private commissions ever since – for example for the past six years I have drawn the winner of a Derby race each year. Please see my CV for further information.

Describe the experience you have had working with children or young people, teaching or facilitating creative processes

  • I am a mother of three which involves endless creative work!
  • I taught extramural tertiary students for The Leaning Connexion, Lower Hutt, from my home in Hawke's Bay for the year of 2004 (just before I had children).
  • These students ranged from late teens to adult.
  • As expressed above, my main themes encompass Nature, our place in it, the idea of fairies, mythology and spirituality.

Why I want to be part of the Creatives in Schools programme and how my involvement will link to my creative practice

My work as an artist has always entailed the education of my viewers as to the sheer beauty of the world around us and the need for our compassion towards every species when we go about our daily life. Having the opportunity to work with young people to encourage: their participation in their imaginative process, understanding of past mythological perspectives, learning to tell their own artistic mythological story and individual creative response to what Nature is showing them would be a wonderful way to further this goal of co-operation with the Earth via Art. The hope is that they will pass the message on to others also.
