Creative ID: 054

Art form(s): Visual Arts, Craft/Object.

Based in: Saint Martins, Christchurch.

When I'm available: I am flexible to work within the school hours, in 2020.

Where I'm available: Christchurch.

My arts or creative practice (including details about my specific focus within that art form/practice and my strengths)

My creative practice is painting and ceramic form. I currently work with oil colour, creating otherworldly landscapes, using a number of different techniques. Paint brush work, frottage, layering, scumbling and wiping off areas of paint are my main ways of working. I have also had extensive experience working in acrylic paints. I am well practised in sculpting clay, hand modelling and the firing process. My strengths are colour and figurative, detailed work. I often explore ecological concerns in my practice, and a lot of my work is inspired and drawn from the local environment.

My track record of experience and success - or the track record of experience and success of the creative or artist that I will partner with

I have a Bachelor degree in Craft and Art Design from Ara, in which I majored in printmaking and sculpture. In 2013 I gained a Masters in painting at Ilam University and received a travel scholarship to New York. I have had extensive experience in exhibiting throughout New Zealand, and have works in a number of collections including the Wallace Collection. I have been a finalist in numerous art awards etc.

Describe the experience you have had working with children or young people, teaching or facilitating creative processes

I managed an artist-run gallery from 2015–2018. The emphasis for exhibitions was with Fine Arts University students. I worked with and organised students to take part in group shows. On a level more close to home, I have often overseen my daughter and her friends painting cards, rocks and posters and working with modelling mediums such as Play-Doh, Fimo and papier-mâché. A particular theme that I have worked with that could be of interest to young people is the issues surrounding climate change and the environment.

Why I want to be part of the Creatives in Schools programme and how my involvement will link to my creative practice

I want to be part of the Creatives in Schools Programme, because I feel I have a lot of experience in painting and clay making to offer students. I enjoy communicating with people and being involved in projects of an arts discipline. I enjoy helping and supporting young people. I also have an interest in art as a means of therapeutic outlet.
