My arts or creative practice (including details about my specific focus within that art form/practice and my strengths)
Hi! I'm based in Nelson but am happy to travel throughout NZ. I would love to work with your school and could offer a series of workshops for and/or devise an original piece of theatre with your students. I have previously worked as part of the Artist in Schools programme (2008) in both of these capacities. I could offer workshops in playwriting, physical theatre, devising, ensemble creation/work, the Viewpoints, improvised theatre, interpreting text, character creation and directing.
My track record of experience and success - or the track record of experience and success of the creative or artist that I will partner with
Over the past 12 years, I have worked with high schools as an Artist in Residence and as a one-off workshop tutor. At a school in Christchurch, I worked with the senior drama class to devise a piece of physical theatre over eight weeks. At a college, I delivered a number of workshops in acting, stage combat, technical theatre and improv. I have worked in a number of schools in Nelson and around NZ delivering workshops on devising, physical theatre and other specialist theatre topics. I ran a weekly youth theatre class for six years as part of a professional theatre company I co-directed with my husband between 2010 and 2015. I am a teacher, director, writer, producer and performer of theatre. I co-founded a Fringe Festival and was awarded Nelsonian of the Year in Arts. I have been drawing an income from my arts practice since 2008 and would love to share what I have learnt over this time with you and your students!
Describe the experience you have had working with children or young people, teaching or facilitating creative processes
A) I have worked with children and young people as a teacher of theatre (weekly classes, one-off workshops and creative projects), as a dramaturg and director and as an actor.
B) I have extensive experience teaching theatre to young people and adults. I have been offering formal theatre courses and classes to the community since 2005 and have worked with institutions such as Teachers' College and the Court Theatre. I have worked as a dramaturg, guiding young people in the creation of their own original scripts, taking them all the way through to performance. I have directed numerous pieces of theatre from Shakespeare to Outdoor Summer Theatre to school holiday children's shows to site-specific work, full-length dramatic works, original work and more. My husband and I established a Theatresports Competition and I organised this for many years. I also co-directed a Theatre Company, facilitating the creative process of our 34 company members over a six-year period.
C) I have mostly taught high school students and adults but have worked with older primary school aged children recently as well. I have created and performed in shows for children as young as three.
Why I want to be part of the Creatives in Schools programme and how my involvement will link to my creative practice
I love seeing young people using their imaginations, connecting with one another in positive ways and emerging as confident humans with clear, unique voices. I have gathered so many tools over the years and I'd love to share them with as many people as possible. I believe that young people have important ideas and stories to tell. Being part of the process of communicating these ideas and stories is very rewarding! I've always found that my work with young people inspires my own practice and keeps it growing and relevant as well.
