My arts or creative practice (including details about my specific focus within that art form/practice and my strengths)

Practising artist member of the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts. Member of the New Zealand Society of Authors. Written several books on art, creativity and an artist biography. I have run successful workshops in kindergartens, primary schools and run ongoing adult classes. My particular interest is in raising the creativity of students studying art as part of the National Curriculum and working with teachers to embed best international practice in their schools. I am the founder of two art movements.

My track record of experience and success - or the track record of experience and success of the creative or artist that I will partner with

Winner of the Financial Times David Thomas Award for work on education for entrepreneurship. Numerous group and solo exhibitions.

Describe the experience you have had working with children or young people, teaching or facilitating creative processes

I was for several years a Youth & Community worker in the UK running youth clubs for ages five upwards. Since coming to New Zealand in 2001 with my family, I have run art workshops in kindergartens, primary schools and adult classes from my own studio and as a guest tutor. I have a son who is now 23 and who never held back in his advice as to what he liked and could do better in my paintings (as well as his own). I have worked with people aged 3 to 89 but this upper limit may increase with new people in my workshops. Using my creative problem-solving method to find their own solutions to any problem they may have in art or life as outlined in one of my books.

Why I want to be part of the Creatives in Schools programme and how my involvement will link to my creative practice

I am keen to work with any teacher who wishes to improve the current National Curriculum in Art away from the 'tick box' method of assessment to truly understanding that art is not simply about producing objects to a formula, but more importantly is a transformative way of being in the world which is capable of finding creative solutions to questions which so far have none, as well as liberating the individual to think for themselves and to recognise the influences which are constantly forming them.
