My arts or creative practice (including details about my specific focus within that art form/practice and my strengths)
I am a prolific Composer/Arranger and multi-instrumentalist. I have toured the globe with my Pacific music trio for 12 years and been involved with multiple projects both here and in Canada. I have been involved with music for 30 years. I have been a tutor for NZ Music Commission since 2006, and have travelled around Auckland and the far north teaching guitar/ukulele/cajon and composition in high schools. I was the Manager and Road Manager of my Pacific music trio. I currently perform with an eight-piece guitar ensemble and my own guitar trio. I manage both of these bands. I also give talks on how to tour and organise yourself on the road. How to start and maintain that pathway.
My track record of experience and success - or the track record of experience and success of the creative or artist that I will partner with
I have worked as a music Mentor for NZ Music Commission since 2006. During this time I have worked in high schools around Auckland, The Eastern Bay of Plenty and the Far North region. My classes have always been met with appreciation and I have always been asked to return for further sessions. I have also worked in South Australia where I worked around 30 schools. I have held a workshops teaching music teachers from around the Auckland region about how to approach group sessions for ukulele. I have been involved with music for over 30 years, with 15 bands, and 35 recorded works. Written and been commissioned to write for two documentaries and two dance companies. I have been a road/tour manager for 25 years and currently manage two bands which I also perform with.
Describe the experience you have had working with children or young people, teaching or facilitating creative processes
I currently teach privately. The age groups are from 6 years to 70 years. I have taught in primary and high schools, with the NZ Music Commission and the South Australian Arts Council. I have worked for REAP in the Eastern Bay of Plenty travelling around Kura Kaupapa schools and high schools in the Whakatane/Ohope region. Workshops have mainly consisted of guitar and ukulele technique and composition as well as rhythm workshops. We have a lot of talented young people in our schools. I have worked in low and high decile schools.
Why I want to be part of the Creatives in Schools programme and how my involvement will link to my creative practice
I am looking to do more teaching work next year. As a musician you have to be able to support your art. I find teaching a great way to stay in touch with my chosen art form, whilst I'm teaching I'm also learning and revisiting musical ideas. I love to see results. If I can give inspiration to a young person with music or somehow lift them to be more positive about their journey I have done my job. Our young people face immense pressures with social pressures and economic situations, we have the highest suicide rate amongst our young ones, I find music to be a healing force. It can help so much.
