Region: Auckland

Art form: Photography/Sculpture/Moving image

Project name: Call Gillian

Creative name: Edith Amituanai

Project information:

Outcomes for students and ākonga: Students became familiar with photography and the appropriate technology. They gained confidence in the role that art plays in the facilitation of expression. Students produced high-quality work and showed pride in having their work displayed in an exhibition and shared at school and in the newsletter. It was an enjoyable arts experience and introduction to arts as a possible career. It was also an opportunity to respond to current events around BLM and Covid.

Outcomes for teachers and kaiako: Teachers enjoyed increased connection with the creative and a deeper understanding of using photography as a medium for story-telling. They connected with other creatives and educators through working with her and strengthened their network of artists and teachers in the Waitākere area.

Outcomes for creatives: The creative connected with local youth, forming some long-lasting relationships and developing connections with the art department. The project inspired a documentary that follows the artist and her work with youth.

Outcomes for parents and whānau: The project was an opportunity for parents to observe their children authentically expressing themselves and be proud of completing an exhibition piece. It enabled parents to see their children at work in a documentary – a unique window into the classroom. For Pasifika families, they had a local Samoan artist working with their children.
