Based in: Canterbury
Where I'm available:
Canterbury
Throughout Christchurch and surrounding areas.
When I'm available: I am available throughout the Christchurch area at any time within the school day. We have schools that book two classes or 32 classes each week and can accommodate any. No school is too big or too small. We don't charge for travel.

My arts or creative practice (including details about my specific focus within that art form/practice and my strengths)

I am the manager/head teacher of a classroom-based music programme that takes primary school classes through a sequential, age-appropriate course. They will use glokenspiels, recorders and hand percussion instruments as they discover and explore jazz, country, raps, pop and of course classical music. I was previously a piano teacher for 13 years and enjoy seeing children learn about the wonderful world of music. This programme takes them through all the fundamentals of music such as rhythm, beats, dynamics, simple note reading and body movement. It is designed to meet the curriculum needs of the school for each age group. I enjoy running PD sessions for staff to bring confidence in this field to them all. A number of schools are finding this is an area that is needed more and more.

My track record of experience and success - or the track record of experience and success of the creative or artist that I will partner with

I have been involved with this music programme for nearly three years now and have successfully led music in over 30 schools this year. As a piano teacher previously, I taught for over 13 years and bring this experience to the classroom. The performance experience I have had on the small stage ensures that I can guide them through a simple performance for assembly or other performances needed. The songs and programme that is used is fun for the students as well as the audience. PD is a specialty that can be offered for the teachers of schools who are lacking in a bit of confidence. With my teacher experience, I am able to lead them through this foreign language so that it can be simplified.

Describe the experience you have had working with children or young people, teaching or facilitating creative processes

With over 60 schools having experienced the programme this year and with the majority of them booking for next year, we know that this programme works. It is age appropriate for all primary school classes from new entrant through to Year 8. If the school is studying a particular topic, we can match music to their theme as we have access to over 250 pieces. They will study how different instruments produce different sounds and create music stories.

Why I want to be part of the Creatives in Schools programme and how my involvement will link to my creative practice

This programme interests me as I see it a great way to bring music back into schools. A large number of schools cannot have the music programme I'm involved with due to budget restraints even though they can see the benefits of having a programme such as this for their students. Some schools have all the instruments and resources available and only need PD to get this happening within the school. I can help with this. My dream is for music to be available for every primary age student throughout New Zealand.
